Composer Hidas, Frigyes
Difficulty level 3
Evaluation level of countries D3 (German medium level)
Duration 5:00
Additional info/contents Although Frigyes Hidas composed in every genre, he gained international fame and recognition principally with his chamber music for brass instruments and his works written for wind ensembles and wind orchestras. In 1995 he was invited to WASBE, the international organization of wind ensembles, and in the final decades of his life, which were rich in commissions, he travelled the world as a competition jury member, guest of honour at festivals and visiting university professor. Full of humour and extremely effective, Merry Music is one of his best-known and most popular works. The whole work is written in three-part A-B-A form and its main theme is cheerful, almost naïve but entirely in the spirit of carefree cheerfulness.
The middle part of the piece seems extremely mischievous, a tango rhythm peppered with trombone glissandi leads the theme. After some time a melancholic alto saxophone solo emerges, which gradually increases in legato, but soon fades away again to make room for the cheerful tones of the recapitulation.
