Additional info/contents	A Joyful Fugue is subtitled 'to follow A Solemn Music'. It was commissioned in 1962 for the Philadelphia Orchestra. Thomson always intended it to be available in a version for band as well as in its original version for orchestra. At the request of publisher G. Schirmer, noted composer (and current Rutgers faculty member) Charles Fussell arranged the work for band. He sought Thomson's input and somewhat followed in reserve Thomson's own practices in adapting A Solemn Music for orchestra. It is in the form of a double fugue with two subjects and two countersubjects. Thomson's use of counterpoint is very sophisticated although never heavy-handed. The final statement brings all four themes together followed by a virtuosic coda.
