Additional info/contents	"Driving Home for Christmas" is a Christmas song written and composed by British singer and songwriter Chris Rea. The first version was originally released in 1986 as the B-side of his single "Hello Friend". In October 1988, a re-recorded version served as one of two new songs on Rea's first compilation album, "New Light Through Old Windows". It was released in December 1988 as the album's fourth single. In interviews for the BBC Radio 4 program "Today" in 2009 and "The Guardian" in 2016, Rea said that he wrote "Driving Home for Christmas" many years before it was first recorded; that was in 1978 when Rea had to return to Middlesbrough from Abbey Road Studios in London. His wife had come to drive him home in her Austin Mini to save money because it was cheaper to drive than to take the train. Rea had just gotten out of the contract and the record company wasn't willing to pay for the train ticket. The inspiration for the song came when they were stuck in heavy traffic while the snow was falling. He looked at the other drivers, who "all looked so pathetic." I jokingly started singing: "We're driving home for Christmas..." "And every time the street lights in the car lit up, I started writing down the lyrics." Rea said "Driving Home for Christmas" was a "car version of a Christmas song." Anton Burger has written a version for a wind orchestra with optional vocals.
