Composer Schönberg, Arnold
Arranger Pirola, Carlo
Difficulty level 3
Duration 5:20
Additional info/contents In 1891, at the age of 17, Schönberg lost his father, which led to his first personal crisis. He left school to work, but also continued his musical studies. To earn a living, he gave music lessons to beginners and also played passionately in an amateur orchestra.
Schönberg taught himself to play the cello and took lessons from Alexander von Zemlinsky (1871-1942). This admiration for Zemlinsky can still be seen today in the intensive correspondence.

The music critic Richard Heuberger encouraged Schönberg to write this work in the style of Franz Schubert after he had already given very positive reviews of two songs in a previous review. In 1896, Arnold Schönberg composed these six pieces for piano four hands, premiered on Valentine's Day, February 14th and dedicated to his student and friend Bella Cohn. They are short compositions from Schönberg's early creative period, written in the late romantic style. Four-handed piano music was very popular at this time and numerous arrangements of works by great classical composers, as well as pieces with teaching didactic content, appeared. Albums with adaptations of contemporary popular music were also in great demand.

Many of Schönberg's early compositions were intended for choral and amateur orchestra performances, publication by music publishers or simply for playing together in various ensemble formations.

The adaptation of the present 5 pieces in a transcription for various instrumental groups was the inspiration and music-historical motivation. As a reminder of the youthful life of this great musician. I think that this music is very suitable for wind and percussion instruments and also offers the opportunity to perform and hear these short pieces in a form other than the piano original.

In this collection for piano 4 hands composed by Schönberg, only one movement has been omitted. The original sequence of pieces was also changed to combine the suite in a form of progressive crescendo:
Varied in the form of dance music and light music.
