Composer Enescu, Georges
Arranger Rogers, R. Mark
Opus no. op.11/2
Difficulty level 4
Duration 12:00
Additional info/contents The Second Romanian Rhapsody by George Enescu is now available in a wind band version that has been neither simplified nor shortened. As is often the case with transcriptions of symphonic works for wind orchestra, the key has been transposed from D major for symphony orchestra to C major for wind orchestra. Transcriptions for wind orchestra are often suggested by the composer himself (as was the case, for example, with Hammersmith by Gustav Holst or the wind orchestra works of Percy Grainger).
The exotic colours of Enescu's orchestration have been retained and therefore the instrumentation is particularly important for a successful interpretation of this score. The role of the English horn is particularly important and the harp is indispensable. The score of George Enescu's Second Romanian Rhapsody contains a peculiar notation: slow music is notated with short (fast) notes. This procedure originates from the Baroque period. Well-known models are the numerous slow movements of Johann Sebastian Bach's cantatas, which are notated with eighth notes. This is also the case with the orchestral score of the Second Romanian Rhapsody by George Enescu, which is notated slowly (in time), with a metronomic notation of quarter notes = 40. While the musicians of symphony orchestras are used to this practice, this archaic notation is problematic for amateur musicians in wind orchestras.
In order to make George Enescu's Second Romanian Rhapsody less daunting, the transcription for wind orchestra (up to bar 194) was notated with doubled note value and in 2/2 time; one bar of Enescu's original score divided into 4/4 is notated as two bars in 2/2. This does not make the music any easier - the musical challenge remains the same, but the handicap of the unusual notation is removed. This practice is similar to the reprinting of old texts from the 18th and 19th centuries. These old texts were published with an archaic spelling because the modern edition uses a contemporary spelling that is easy to read. The text has not changed significantly, but an impediment to reading has been removed.
