Additional info/contents The history of paper spans more than 5,000 years and probably began in ancient Egypt in 3,500 BC with the use of papyrus. The oldest finds of written paper date back to 2,700 BC. The manufacture of paper was first described in China in 105 AD. The Arabs gained knowledge of the art of papermaking in 750 AD through Chinese prisoners of war. Around this time, the Celtic Ogham script was developed in Ireland, which was very often still carved into stones or trees. In Europe, the first paper mill did not start work until the 12th century! As different as the methods of production and the historical uses were, paper has always been a bearer of wisdom, art and knowledge. Even today, in the age of digitalisation, there is still something "sacred" about paper. Thomas Doss has written a great composition that reflects the history of paper and in which you can recognise in which time you are.
