Additional info/contents	The name comes from Saint Walpurga, whose day of remembrance is 1 May. In the Middle Ages, bells were rung on the days before 1 May to ward off alleged witches. This ringing of bells can also be heard a few times in the march. At that time, people imagined that witches were up to mischief on Blocksberg on the night of 1 May. This threatening atmosphere is expressed both harmonically and rhythmically. Even today, a so-called "May fire" is lit on 30 April in German-speaking countries to drive away evil spirits. People dance around the fire until late at night and sing and drink. Occasionally, people jump over the fire when it has already burnt down a bit. This crazy and bizarre mood is reflected especially at the end of the composition.
