Additional info/contents In 1843 Dickens wrote the story A Christmas Carol (German title: Eine Weihnachtsgeschichte) with the intention of drawing the reader's attention to the plight of the poor in English society. On 19 December 1843 the work was published with illustrations by John Leech.
The heartless profiteer Ebenezer Scrooge turns into a benevolent old gentleman who alleviates people's misery. For this Dickens uses the means of the grotesque: On Christmas Eve the spirit of his deceased business partner Marley appears to the old miser, who was even more miserly than Scrooge during his lifetime, and predicts a dark end for Scrooge in case he does not change his life fundamentally. Then the spirit of Christmas past, which takes Scrooge back to his childhood, is revealed, followed by the spirit of Christmas present, which leads him into the house of his poorly living scribe Cratchit and his family, and into the house of his nephew. The spirit of the future Christmas finally leads him to his lonely deathbed and shows him his tombstone. "The ways of men foreshadow a certain end, which they lead to if one insists on them. But if one deviates from the ways, the end also changes," Scrooge recognizes, purifies himself and from then on becomes another human being.
