It is the year 1625 and we find ourselves in the middle of the Thirty Year War, at the time of the Counter-Reformation.
When a Catholic priest is assigned a post in the idyllic Upper Austrian village Frankenburg, the majority of the Protestant population rises up against the religious dictates of the Catholic lord.
It culminates in an armed conflict. The Protestant farmers manage to gain and hold the upper hand for three days. When the Bavarian governor promises them clemency, the farmers lift the siege. The unarmed men are ordered to move to nearby Haushamerfeld where the true nature of the governor’s mercy is revealed. In front of a crowd of about 5000 people, the count makes the 36 supposed ringleaders of the Frankenburg uprising pair off and roll dice against each other for their lives. The losers are hanged immediately.
This drastic punishment, the so called “Frankenburg Dice Game”, which would go down in Upper Austrian history, didn’t have the desired effect as a deterrent. Instead it acted as a catalyst for the great farmer’s revolt in Upper Austria.
