Composer Capuzzi, Antonio
Arranger Oswald, Gerald
Difficulty level 3
Duration 9:05
Additional info/contents Antonio Capuzzi (1755-1818) was an Italian violin virtuoso and composer who studied violin with Antonio Nazari and composition with Ferdinando Bertoni, the bandmaster of St. Mark's Basilica in Venice. In 1805 he moved from Venice to Bergamo, where he taught violin at the Instituto Musicale and conducted the orchestra at the Teatro Riccardi. He was very highly regarded both as a teacher and as a musician.
Although he was famous in his time, most of his music has been forgotten today. The most frequently performed of his works today is the Concerto for Double Bass. All of Capuzzi's well-known compositions were written during his time in Venice. It was also there that Capuzzi became friends with Domenico Dragonetti, Beethoven's virtuoso bassist. His Concerto for Double Bass is believed to have been written for Dragonetti.
Gerald Oswald created an excellent arrangement of the second movement (Andante) and the third movement (Rondo), in which the tuba or euphonium take on the role of soloist, accompanied by the wind orchestra. The solo part is also available in an edition with piano accompaniment.
