The Terracotta Army is one of the most important archaeological discoveries of the 20th century. It consists of over 8,000 life-sized terracotta figures that are said to guard the tomb of the first emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang. The figures were made in the 3rd century BC. Erected in the 1st century BC, they represent the emperor's army, including soldiers, chariots, horses and even generals. It was discovered by chance in 1974 by farmers drilling a well near the city of Xi'an in China's Shaanxi Province. Since then, archaeologists have excavated and restored thousands of figures. The figures were placed in battle formation in pits near Qin Shi Huang's burial mound.

The characters are remarkably detailed and realistic, with individually designed facial features, hairstyles and clothing. They are also depicted in different poses and with different weapons, indicating the rank and functions of the soldiers in the army. The Terracotta Army was probably intended to protect the emperor in the afterlife and to assist him in battle against his enemies. The size and detail of the army reflect the wealth and power of the first emperor of China.

The Terracotta Army is now one of the most important tourist attractions in China and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The museum that houses the figures attracts millions of visitors from around the world every year.
