Additional info/contents In Wallberg, Switzerland, a competition for wind orchestras and brass bands is held every year. In addition to an anthem and a solo work, all orchestras must play a compulsory piece. Before the competition in 2012, the commission for this compulsory piece was given to Jan de Haan. The composition was given the title Musica Helvetica. It is a concert work in three parts, the last two of which flow directly into each other. The first part, "Musica Prima", is a virtuoso, brisk opening with interspersed jazzy influences. This contrasts with the following part, "Musica Sacra", in which the main theme is beautifully elaborated - the instrumentation here is exceptionally colourful. The last part, "Musica Alpina", is inspired by the varied landscape of Switzerland. With its whimsical structure, it forms a worthy conclusion to this beautiful triptych.
