Additional info/contents The instrumentation is a typical American standard instrumentation. The oboe is written in two parts only (bar 11 and bars 184-189), so it can easily be played with an oboe. The bassoon part is written in one voice, so one bassoon is sufficient. The trumpet part is notated for three voices only, but from bar 184 onwards it is in divisi (6 voices). There is an extra contrabass part which is not notated separately in the score (doubling of the tuba part).
To note: There are solo passages in the alto saxophone (bar 156 ff) and in the bass clarinet (bar 163 ff).
The percussion apparatus is relatively large. In order to do justice to the piece with its energy, as many instruments as possible should be covered.
The minimum instrumentation is 4 players (without mallets). If one wants to cover all voices, one needs 5-6 percussionists.
The mallet part (xylophone, glockenspiel, vibraphone, tubular glockenspiel) doubles (supports) other orchestra parts. It can be mastered with one player.
The kettledrums (4 pieces, without retuning) are obligatory.
The first percussion part (hi-hat, snare drum, 3 toms, bass drum) should be played by two players. The double solo introduction could be taken over by another voice (e.g. timpani) if there are only 3 percussionists. If possible, the bass drum and toms should be played separately.
The second percussion part (triangle, woodblock, claves, vibraslap, tambourine, suspended cymbal, cymbal a due/crash cymbal, tam-tam) can be played, except for the vibraslap/ triangle part (bars 139-145), by an experienced player with a well-organised structure with quick changes (two players would be more ideal).
In this case, the vibraslap and triangle should be taken over by the timpani part.
