The musical world of the Baroque produced a variety of impressive compositions, and Johann Pezel's collection "Five-part Blowing Music" is undoubtedly a pearl of this era. This suite, consisting of seven movements, presents a masterful fusion of baroque elegance and profound musicality. Not least thanks to Barton Cummings' arrangement for wind orchestra, which is in the tradition of Gordon Jacob's "William Byrd Suite", "Pezelianna" becomes a timeless work.

The opening movement “Intrada” immediately introduces the listener to the world of “Pezelianna”. The majestic opening, typical of Baroque music, presents a radiant fanfare that transports the listener to the festive atmosphere of the 17th century. Pezel manages to maintain the grandeur of the beginning through clever contrasts as it progresses.

The subsequent movements "Sarabande" and "Bal" bring a shift from the splendor of the Intrada to the graceful dance forms of the Baroque. The Sarabande enchants with its slow, solemn beauty, while the Bal features lively rhythms and playful melodies. Here Pezel shows his ability to embed feeling and liveliness into his music.

The "Allemande" and the "Gigue" present themselves as lively and rhythmically demanding movements. The Allemande, a German dance, brings with it a certain melancholy, while the Gigue, as the final movement, brings the work to a rousing climax with lively momentum and virtuosity.

The repetition of Sarabande and Bal in the suite gives the work a textural sophistication. Pezel manages to present these sentences in a new context, creating a coherent narrative and subtly intertwining the themes.

Barton Cummings' arrangement for concert band helps place "Pezelianna" in the tradition of great suites such as Gordon Jacob's "William Byrd Suite." Cummings maintains the integrity of Pezel's original while harnessing its tonal richness and expressiveness for concert band. The editing makes it possible to bring the timeless beauty of "Pezelianna" to a wider audience.
