Composer Codina, Genaro
Arranger Rundel, Siegfried
Difficulty level 3+
Duration 4:19
Additional info/contents In 1891, Genaro Codina's circle of friends had a heated discussion about who was the better composer, his brother-in-law Fernando Villapando or Codina. It was agreed that both should compose a march and that a jury should then make a judgement as to which composition was the better piece. The competition dragged on, but finally Codina performed a march on the harp, which he called "Marcha Aréchiga". This composition clearly emerged as the better piece in the competition between him and his brother-in-law. However, General Jesús Aréchiga, the then provincial governor, did not accept the dedication and instead proposed the title "Zacatecas" as a homage to the province of the same name and its capital. Zacatecas Town Music performed the march for the first time under the direction of Fernando Villalpando, who was also responsible for the instrumentation, in a concert in the Plaza de Armas on 15 September 1892. Codina's march literally became the "second national anthem" when it was accompanied by a patriotic text that inspired all Mexicans.
