Composer Kraas, Thiemo
Difficulty level 2
Duration 1:55
Additional info/contents "Apertum" comes from Latin and means "open sky" or "open space". On the one hand, the title is program insofar as the work was specially conceived for use as a complete choir and thus as open-air music. For this reason the composition is entirely orchestrated in tutti. The percussion - in traditional instrumentation with snare and bass drum plus cymbal - plays along throughout the piece and thus always provides the appropriate pulse. On the other hand, the title also allows a deeper interpretation: In this work, the conductor has the opportunity to influence certain musical parameters. The tempo is freely selectable in the range from quarter = 92 to 126 and can be individually adapted to the respective performance conditions. The percussion can be extended to include timpani, glockenspiel (or lyre) and a percussion voice for use in concert. In addition, the conductor also has the possibility - depending on the instrumentation of his orchestra - to play various passages with the instrumentation and thus also with the timbres. The conductor may use the entire work as an "open space" for his individual wishes, depending on the circumstances. In addition, "Apertum" can only be performed with brass instruments (and optional percussion). The composition is dedicated to the Nordbayerische Musikbund and its national conductor Ernst Oestreicher on their 60th birthday in 2015.
