Additional info/contents A Bluegrass Overture was commissioned by Gabriel Wooley to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Central Kentucky Concert Band in 2016 and financially supported by Leslie and Cathy Anderson.

This energetic overture begins with an introduction of loose "bluegrass chords" before a slow chorale is heard in legato in the clarinets and flutes. This is short-lived, however, as a new mood is soon created by an accompaniment with repeated notes. This eventually leads to the main theme with clear syncopations and blues modulations. The central passage features a cantabile melody that frequently changes key before the main theme returns and leads to a triumphant presentation of the previous chorale melody.

Bluegrass music is a genre of American roots music that originated in the Appalachian region of the United States. It is characterized by its distinctive vocal harmonies, intricate instrumental arrangements, and use of acoustic stringed instruments such as the guitar, banjo, fiddle, mandolin, and upright bass.

The origins of bluegrass can be traced back to the traditional music of the British Isles and the influence of African-American music, particularly blues and jazz. The genre was popularized in the 1940s and 1950s by musicians such as Bill Monroe, Flatt and Scruggs, and the Stanley Brothers.

Today, bluegrass remains a vibrant and popular genre with a dedicated fanbase and numerous festivals and events held throughout the year. Some popular contemporary bluegrass musicians include Alison Krauss, Chris Thile, and the Punch Brothers.
