Composer Sparke, Philip
Difficulty level 3
Evaluation level of countries C2 (Swiss 3rd class); D3 (German medium level)
Duration 8:15
Additional info/contents This work was commissioned by Dr. Robert Oertli from Möhlin, Switzerland, and is based on an earlier composition called Spirit of the Sequoia. The piece is inspired by how the human spirit can gain from setbacks: we become stronger after adversity. Sparke used the Californian redwood tree as a metaphor for this basic idea. The remarkable life cycle of these amazing trees involves them dropping seeds to the ground, which require heat to open their shells and germinate; the seeds require destruction in order to procreate. This piece is particularly suitable for younger bands - one of the last wishes of the initial commissioner.

The composition "And Still, the Spirit (Spirit of the Sequoia)" by Philip Sparke is a remarkable musical work based on the life cycle of the California sequoia tree and represents a profound metaphor for the human journey and the resilience of the human soul .

Philip Sparke uses the California sequoia tree as a metaphor to illustrate a fundamental idea: the cycle of life characterized by destruction and rebirth. The life cycle of these amazing trees begins with their seeds falling to the earth and requiring warmth so their shell opens and they begin to germinate. These seeds rely on the destruction of the mother tree by forest fires in order to germinate. Paradoxically, however, these fires enable seeds to sprout by breaking down the seeds' protective coating and releasing nutrients in the soil.

Sparke applies this concept to the human experience, emphasizing the idea that, like the seeds of the sequoia tree, the human soul can emerge stronger from challenges and misfortunes. By metaphorically comparing the life cycle of the sequoia tree, Sparke illustrates the idea that destruction and rebirth are inextricably linked, and that the greatest triumphs can often arise from the darkest moments.

The musical realization of “And Still, the Spirit” reflects this profound metaphor. The composition progresses through different moods and soundscapes, symbolizing the cycle of life and the different phases of resilience. From quiet and contemplative passages to dramatic and powerful sections, Sparke paints a musical portrait of growth, destruction, hope and rebirth.

Overall, "And Still, the Spirit (Spirit of the Sequoia)" by Philip Sparke is an impressive and profound composition that not only celebrates the beauty and size of the sequoia, but also an important message about human resilience and ability to emerge stronger from challenges and difficulties.

Version 1:

Ladies and Gentlemen,

You are about to hear the work "And Still, the Spirit," based on the composition "Spirit of the Sequoia." This impressive piece was commissioned by Dr. Robert Oertli from Möhlin, Switzerland, and set to music by Philip Sparke.

Sparke uses the California redwood as a powerful metaphor: The seeds of these majestic trees fall to the ground and require the warmth of wildfires to open their hard shells and germinate. Although the fires destroy the mother tree, they paradoxically enable new life and growth. This fascinating natural phenomenon symbolizes the human experience—we, too, can emerge strengthened and renewed after difficult times.

Version 2:

Ladies and Gentlemen,

You are about to hear Philip Sparke's composition "And Still, the Spirit (Spirit of the Sequoia)" – a stunning musical work based on the fascinating life cycle of the California redwood.

Philip Sparke uses the metaphor of this majestic tree, whose seeds are only germinated by the destruction of the parent tree by wildfire, to convey a profound message about the human journey through life. Just as the seeds of the redwood are strengthened by fire and destruction, Sparke demonstrates how the human soul grows and draws new strength from challenges and adversity.

The composition reflects this cycle of destruction and rebirth in striking soundscapes: from quiet, contemplative moments to powerful, dramatic passages that embody hope and renewal.

"And Still, the Spirit" is not only a musical homage to the beauty and grandeur of the sequoia trees, but also a touching symbol of resilience, growth, and the unwavering power of life.

Let this profound music inspire you and take you on a journey that inspires courage and gives confidence.
