Additional info/contents There are numerous beautiful works in old English music, of which unfortunately only a few have achieved a greater degree of recognition. For the suite Old English Tunes and Airs, unknown pieces by less famous composers were therefore deliberately selected, although they are in no way inferior in quality to the well-known tunes, airs and voluntaries. Stylistically, they can be classified as belonging to the transitional period between the Baroque and Classical periods. All six short pieces were originally written for organ. Since the sound of both the organ and wind instruments is produced by air and the imitation of solo wind instruments was particularly popular in English organ literature, these works lend themselves especially well to a transcription for wind orchestra. Albert Loritz has arranged the instrumentation in such a way that the suite can also be played by a relatively small ensemble. The minimum instrumentation consists of a complete brass section and 5 woodwind parts, namely flute, 1st clarinet, 2nd clarinet, alto saxophone and tenor saxophone.

The world of "Old English Tunes and Airs" takes us to a time when music was a deeply rooted form of cultural expression. These old English tunes and songs not only represent musical traditions, but also provide a fascinating insight into England's history and heritage. The "Old English Tunes and Airs" have their roots deep in the history of England. These melodies date back to the Middle Ages and reflect the diverse cultural influences that have shaped the country over the centuries. From Anglo-Saxon sounds to Renaissance and Baroque influences, the variety of these melodies is impressive.

A large part of the "Old English Tunes" comes from the folk music tradition. These songs have been passed down from generation to generation and tell stories of love, loss, adventure and everyday life. The melodies were often simple but catchy, and served as a means of community building and identity. The diversity of "Old English Tunes and Airs" reflects the cultural changes that England experienced over the centuries. Influences from the Tudors to the Stuarts and beyond can be heard in these tunes. The evolution of dance music, ballads and hymns over time adds to the rich palette of these ancient tunes.

The instrumentation of these tunes varied depending on the region and time period. Early pieces were often played on traditional instruments such as the lute, bagpipes or hurdy-gurdy. Over time, string instruments and keyboard instruments were also integrated into the performances. This diverse instrumentation gave the melodies a unique and characteristic sound. The "Old English Tunes and Airs" were temporarily forgotten, but during the 19th century a new interest in the preservation and revitalization of these tunes arose. Collectors and folklorists began recording these pieces, and musicians such as Cecil Sharp helped revive the folk music tradition.

Today, “Old English Tunes and Airs” are experiencing a renaissance, particularly in the world of folk music and historical performance practice. Artists and ensembles are committed to keeping these traditional melodies alive and interpreting them in a contemporary way. Passing on this musical heritage plays a vital role in ensuring that the old English tunes remain alive for future generations.
