Programme notes *: Bacchantes in Music: A Journey through the Dionysian World of Sounds The connection between ancient mythology and music is profound and fascinating. A term that particularly vividly embodies this connection is that of “Bacchants”. In Greek mythology, the Bacchantes were the followers of the god Dionysus, the god of wine, fertility and ecstasy. They were known for their wild and ecstatic rituals, in which music played a central role. Throughout music history, composers and artists have repeatedly resorted to the theme of the Bacchantes in order to sonically interpret the idea of ecstasy, intoxication and drunkenness. An example of this is the "Bacchus and Ariadne" suite by Albert Roussel, which musically tells the story of Bacchus and Ariadne from Greek mythology. Roussel managed to capture the wild and ecstatic atmosphere of the Bacchante rituals through his music, using powerful rhythms, exotic harmonies and suggestive melodies. In the opera world you can also find numerous works that deal with the theme of the Bacchantes. The most famous is Richard Strauss' opera "Ariadne auf Naxos", which integrates elements of the Bacchante rituals into the plot and thus creates a special sensual and theatrical dimension. In addition to classical music, modern composers and musicians have also taken up the concept of the Bacchantes and incorporated them into their works. Bands and artists from the fields of ethno-jazz, experimental music and world music have integrated the ecstatic and trance-like atmosphere of the Bacchante rituals into their music to create a more intense and transcendent experience.
