In the Hebrew Bible, the poet, singer and seer Asaf was responsible for the choir in King David's house. Several psalms are attributed to him, including Psalm 81, which is used in this work. The melody of this psalm is framed by a march-like opening section and the traditional klezmer melody "Uri Tzion" leads into a spectacular finale.
