Additional info/contents The empty board, the white sheet of paper - symbols of the blank memory, free of impressions - coming experiences will shape it. Yet before, the birth - an exhausting process - the starting point of creative action. The motivation and the decision to meet a challenge, to collect impressions, to draw conclusions from experience and to acquire new skills. Memories are growing - experience, words and thoughts are written down to the board. Gradually, this single board is being filled - more and more. Sometime, it’s going to run out of space. Action needs further room, a decision is desired - Tabula Rasa - a new beginning…

Originally, the piece was written in the years 2005 to 2007 as the very first piece of the composer, however, it has been finished in 2015. The title Tabula Rasa refers to the composer's first attempts in writing for wind band and, furthermore, to the inevitable change of things in the course of time.

The composition "Tabula Rasa" by the Austrian composer Helmut Kogler is a fascinating musical journey that impressively captures the concept of the "blank slate" or "blank sheet" in music. Through a masterful use of timbres, structures and motivic developments, Kogler creates a sonic narrative that illustrates the journey of the human spirit from birth to new beginnings.

1. unwritten memory - birth and creative action:
The composition begins with a sonic representation of the "blank slate". The music begins powerfully and symbolises the birth of a human being. This is followed by a quiet part that reflects the calm and the potential of an undescribed memory that is free of impressions. The starting point, the birth, is represented by a perhaps tense and developing musical performance. This phase symbolises the starting point for creative action and the motivation to face new challenges.

2. experiences and memories:
As the music progresses, more varied timbres and motifs are introduced, representing the accumulation of experiences and memories. The musical texture becomes more complex, similar to the increasing abundance on the "blackboard". The sounds reflect the dynamics of human interaction with the world as thoughts and words gradually fill the blackboard.

3. blackboard becomes full - need for space:
The music intensifies as the blackboard becomes more and more full. This could be interpreted as a musical representation of the growing need for space for new experiences and thoughts. The soundscape becomes denser to reflect the increasing volume of memories and thoughts.

4th Tabula Rasa - A New Beginning:
The climax of the composition reaches its climax with the "Tabula Rasa" - the new beginning. Here the music becomes a sonic interpretation of a decision to take a new path. The musical energy and intensity return to represent the courageous choice to wipe the slate clean and make a fresh start.

5. conclusion and reflection:
The composition concludes with a withdrawn and reflective passage. This could be interpreted as the phase where the person can pause after a fresh start and contemplate the experience so far. The music invites the listener to reflect on the cycle of life and the continuous search for newness and meaning.
