Programme notes *: additional text

The inspiration for this piece comes from one of Henry David Thoreau's most famous quotes - "Go confidently in the direction of your dreams! Live the life you've imagined." It was Thoreau's vision that we contemplate a simpler life and be deep thinkers about what we want our lives to be.

"Dream, Imagine, Live (Thoreau's Vision)" was commissioned by the Thoreau Middle School Symphony Band under the direction of Katrina Davilis Chaney. The piece was premiered in February 2014. Ms Chaney wanted a piece divided into three sections. I decided to write a continuous lament that is played without a pause and contains all three main themes of each main section of the piece, based on the same four-note theme that begins in the trumpets of the notes G, D, F and G.

The title and inspiration for the piece was appropriately taken from the school's namesake, the famous author, poet and philosopher Henry David Thoreau. The title is taken directly from one of Thoreau's famous quotes, "Go confidently in the direction of your dreams! Live the life you have imagined." Thoreau always prophesied that we should live the simple life, get back to basics and be filled with awe and wonder at nature and the world around us.

In writing the piece, an attempt was made to follow this approach by taking a simple four-note motif and developing it in three varied musical presentations: The section "Dream" is bold and aggressive and begins immediately with a melody based on the four-note motif, with strong punctuation figures. A counterline is then inserted, followed by a second theme that is used as bridging material in the rest of the work. It is presented in a mixed meter between triple feeling. The first theme is developed through the interplay between brass and woodwind and percussion.

A transition over the intermediate material leads into the beautiful "Imagine" section of the piece. It should be played as expressively as possible. This section is based on a piano piece I originally wanted to play at my wedding and dedicated to my wife. There is a wonderful interaction between the trumpet and the ephonium solo. I had originally conceived the trumpet solo as a kind of timpani beat, as it appeared in the Thoreau tape, and played this solo at the premiere of the piece.

After the conclusion of the slow "Imagine" section, the piece transitions into the "Live" section of the piece, taking the four-note motif temporally into the jig style. This section has similar interplay to the first section of the piece, but now in triple groove. This is followed by an extended version of the bridge material, a renewed emphasis on the jig theme, more interplay between sections, building up to the climax of the piece where the 'Imagine' theme is presented in an extension while the 'Live' theme continues in jigt style. The whole is rounded off by a fast restocodeo.
