Additional info/contents This composition tells the ancient Japanese legend of Amaterasu, goddess of the Sun. Amaterasu, the sun goddess had a very glamorous and dazzling ppearance. When her brother Susanoo the storm god comes to visit, they fight. In her fury and grief she hides inside a cave, and doesn’t come out, effectively hiding the sun for a long period of time, making it dark on Earth. The other gods beg her to come out, and return light to the world, but Amaterasu continues to sulk inside her cave. Eventually the other gods come up with a ruse to lure her out. They place a large mirror at the cave entrance, and Uzume the goddess of pleasure begins to dance. Amaterasu is curious and ventures out. Then she looks in the mirror and sees how beautiful she is, and she becomes happy. Her brother Susanoo is expelled, and the sun can shine every day once more.

Amaterasu, the sun goddess of Shintoism, embodies one of the most important and fascinating figures in Japanese mythology. Her name literally means "Shining Celestial Empress," and she is worshiped as the goddess of the sun and light. The legends surrounding Amaterasu are rich in symbolism and deep meaning, and she plays a central role in the cosmological imagination and spiritual practice of Shintoism.

The story of Amaterasu is closely intertwined with the other kami (gods) and mythological figures of Shintoism, particularly her two siblings, Susanoo, the god of the sea and storms, and Tsukuyomi, the god of the moon. The legend tells of a series of divine events and conflicts that led to Amaterasu's isolation and ultimately her return and the renewal of light in the world.

One of the most famous stories about Amaterasu is the event in which she retreated into a cave out of grief and anger, causing the world to be plunged into darkness. This came after her brother Susanoo wreaked havoc and destruction on their kingdom in a fit of rage. The other Kami tried in vain to lure Amaterasu out of her cave, until the goddess Ame-no-Uzume finally managed to lure her out with cunning and humor. As Amaterasu left the cave, the light returned and the world shone again in its glory.

This legend of Amaterasu symbolizes not only the return of light and life, but also the meaning of harmony, reconciliation and spiritual purification. It is a symbol of the recurring power of good over evil and the need to face and grow from life's challenges.

In Japanese culture and religion, Amaterasu is revered as the patron saint of the imperial family and is seen as a source of luck, prosperity and well-being. Their worship and veneration are deeply rooted in the traditions and customs of Shintoism and have played a significant role in the spiritual life of Japanese society.

In modern times, Amaterasu continues to be revered as a symbol of hope, light and spiritual renewal. Their legends and presence permeate Japanese culture, providing inspiration and comfort to people of all ages and circumstances. Amaterasu remains one of the most fascinating and significant deities not only in Japanese mythology, but throughout world religion.
