The composition "Collage for Band (On Folk Songs from Tohoku District)" by Tetsunosuke Kushida is a fascinating work for wind orchestra that uses traditional Japanese folk songs from the Tohoku region as source material. Kushida describes the piece as a search for "wa," a Japanese term best translated as harmony, and emphasizes the use of Western wind instruments to create a sonic space of "wa."

The work is written for a flexible instrumental ensemble, meaning that the melodic parts can be exchanged up and down and it is possible to respond in a folksy and spontaneous manner. This flexibility allows musicians to adapt the interpretation of the piece to individual circumstances and promote a sense of community and collaboration.

The first half of the work presents a relaxed and natural opening that focuses on the Nanbu Ushioi Uta, one of the most popular Japanese folk songs, originating from the mountainous northern region of Japan. The gentle melodies and harmonic structures create an atmosphere of calm and serenity that reflects the landscape and traditions of the region.

The second half of the work is a lively dance that utilizes Tsugaru Jongarabushi, a term used to describe both the music originating from the Tsugaru Peninsula and the shamisen-like instrument that plays it. This dance sequence brings an energy and dynamism to the piece that thrills the listener and makes them resonate.

Overall, "Collage for Band (On Folk Songs from Tohoku District)" is a fascinating fusion of traditional Japanese music and Western wind band tradition. Tetsunosuke Kushida succeeds in bringing to life the unique sound worlds of the Tohoku region while offering a modern and accessible interpretation that bridges the past and present. The piece invites listeners to go on a sonic journey through the landscape and culture of the Tohoku district and discover the beauty and diversity of Japanese folk music.
