Additional info/contents When the Roman emperor Hadrian first envisioned a huge wall across England in A.D. 122, he used stone, wood, and iron to shield Roman Britannia from the unconquered Celtic tribes.

A significant portion of the wall still exists, particularly the mid-section, and for much of its length the wall can be followed on foot by Hadrian's Wall Path or by cycle on National Cycle Route 72. It is the most popular tourist attraction in Northern England, where it is often known simply as the Roman Wall, or the Wall. It was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. English Heritage, a government organisation in charge of managing the historic environment of England, describes it as "the most important monument built by the Romans in Britain"

"Hadrian's Wall" by Robert W. Smith is based on the legend and lore of the great wall. Suitable for concert and festival performance, "Hadrian's Wall" is written well within the technical abilities of bands at the medium easy level. This powerful work will capture the imagination of the band while providing exceptional teaching opportunities. An excellent work that yields maximum musical results.

Hadrian's Wall: A historical fortification of great importance

Hadrian's Wall, one of the most famous ancient fortifications in the world, stretches across northern England from the Irish Sea to the North Sea. Built during the reign of the Roman Emperor Hadrian between 122 and 128 AD, it represents an impressive architectural testament to Roman military technology and strategy. This report highlights the history and significance of this impressive structure.

- Historical background:
The Roman presence in Britain began in AD 43 under the Emperor Claudius. In the following decades, the Roman Empire expanded further north. However, under Emperor Hadrian it was decided to establish a permanent border to protect Roman territory and secure the northern border areas from attacks by barbarian tribes, particularly the Picts from what is now Scotland.

- Construction and structure:
Hadrian's Wall stretches approximately 117 kilometers from Wallsend in the east to Bowness-on-Solway in the west. It consists of a massive stone and earth wall that was built by Roman soldiers and forced laborers. The rampart averaged about 4.5 meters high and 3 meters wide, with numerous watchtowers and fortifications along its length to bolster defenses and enable communications.

- Function and meaning:
Hadrian's Wall served as a borderline between Roman Britain in the south and the barbarian tribes in the north. It was intended not only to serve as a defensive structure, but also as a symbol of Roman power and authority. The wall controlled trade and the movement of people between the two regions and played a crucial role in integrating the northern borderlands into the Roman Empire.

- Conservation and UNESCO World Heritage:
Although Hadrian's Wall has been partially destroyed over the centuries and many of its stones have been reused to build other structures, significant parts of it still remain today. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987, Hadrian's Wall attracts thousands of tourists and history buffs every year who come to admire the impressive remains of this ancient fortification.

- Conclusion:
Hadrian's Wall remains a fascinating relic of Roman antiquity and a significant symbol of the boundaries and power of the Roman Empire. Its creation and role in Britain's history are of enormous historical significance and have left a lasting mark on the region's heritage and culture. Hadrian's Wall therefore remains not only an imposing archaeological monument, but also a testament to human perseverance and technological innovation.
