Composer Chance, John Barnes
Difficulty level 5
Duration 17:00

Symphony #2 for Winds and percussion was completed in 1972, just before the composer's untimely passing. The entire work is derived from a four.note motive: C#, D, F, and E. These four notes are manipulated in many ways, including transposition, inversion, retrograde-inversion and fragmentation. By transposing the theme at the tritone, an eight-note row is created - the source for many of the woodwinds runs heard in the first movement. The second movement is based on the minor third - the interval between the first and last notes of the motive. The third movement is an episodic form; all of the themes are presented simultaneously near the end of the work just prior to a restatement of two themes from the first movement.
