Holst was commissioned to compose this work for the professional wind orchestra of the BBC. The piece was first performed in the USA under the direction of Captain Taylor Branson with the "United States Marine Band". A performance of the wind band version in England was not in the cards at the time. Holst himself should have performed it, but a health setback prevented this.
