Juraj Jánošík life was very short, but very adventurous and dangerous. He was born in January 1688 in Tìrchová - a small town in north-west Slovakia near the city of Žilina (then the Austrian/Hungarian Empire). His childhood was normal and unremarkable. At the age of 19 he joined General Ferenc Rákoci's insurgent army (the so-called Kurúcen) as a soldier. The insurgent army was a sign of the times and was directed against the Habsburg rule and its oppressive measures (forced re-Catholicisation, high tax levies, high penalties for trivial offences...). However, this army suffered a bitter defeat at the hands of the imperial army in 1708 - many, including JÁNOŠÍK, were taken prisoner. Later he was forced to become a soldier in the imperial army. He was released from this army in 1710.

From then on he joined the rebels (forest robbers) and soon became their leader in 1711. This group of robbers made it their goal to raid and exploit the travelling rich in order to redistribute their loot in the poor mountain villages. For this purpose, the villagers often hid the rebels wanted by the emperor's troops, with the result that the rebels around JÁNOŠÍK were able to go about their mischief in this way for over 2 years without being discovered. It was only in March 1713, during a party and dance in a small village tavern, that JÁNOŠÍK was arrested by the imperial troops through treachery. Tragically, it was his mistress who committed this treason in return for payment. A quick and short trial followed. The verdict was that JÁNOŠÍK, then only 25 years old, was executed on the gallows on 17 March 1713. The cruel thing was, he was executed by hanging from a hook that was drilled through his ribs.

Soon after his death, JÁNOŠÍK became a legend - a folk hero who fought for freedom and against the injustices of the feudalistic society of the time.
Thus JÁNOŠÍK embodies a Slovak version of Robin Hood or William Tell.
