Ihr Komponist, der aus Brandenburg stammende Nikolaus Zangius ist nichtsdestotrotz weitgehend unbekannt. Als „Musicus und Poeticus“ lebte er an der Wende vom 16. zum 17. Jahrhundert und wirkte an verschiedenen europäischen Höfen von Berlin über Danzig bis nach Prag. In Angelus ad pastores ait vertont er eine beliebte Bibelstelle aus dem Lukas-Evangelium: Der Engel des Herrn verkündet die Geburt Christi an die Hirten.
