Brief description |
The renaissance of the oboe as a solo instrument in the 20th century has been nourished by the impressive number and quality of compositions written for the oboe by British composers. This music was shaped in part as a result of the prodigious activity of notable British oboists, such as Leon Goossens, Evelyn Rothwell, Janet Craxton, Sarah Francis and Malcolm Messiter. The five pieces in this program, one written each decade from the 1940s to the 1980s, reveal a wealth of beauty, innovation and tradition. Performing the pieces on this CD are William McMullen, associate professor of oboe at the University of Nebraska and Catherine Herbener, a member of the Bachman Trio, operating a piano studio in Lincoln, Nebraska. |
