Programme notes *: Asteroids and comets have played an important role in the entire history of life on Earth. It is very likely that dinosaurs were exterminated by the impact of an asteroid in the Gulf of Mexico. Huge tidal waves and firestorms have wiped out all life. The work is based on the Christian calendar in the year 2067. A collision has just taken place in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, in which an asteroid was caught in the gravitational force of the Earth. It is approaching the blue planet unchecked. Since its peoples were constantly fighting each other, they failed to build a global defence system against dangers from space. A scanner picks up the asteroid and immediately sends a message to the President of the Anglo-American Union. The probability that the asteroid will hit the earth is estimated by experts to be 50%. There are plans to bombard the celestial body with rockets live with hydrogen bombs or laser cannons to throw it off course, but they fail. The size of the asteroid seems to threaten the existence of mankind. Connoisseurs stare confusedly into the night sky. But for the time being, there is peace on Earth...
