Evaluation level of countries D4 (German upper level)
Duration 9:30
Additional info/contents As with all great sporting events, the 1998 World Cup Chanpionship of soccer was about one thing: Victory. Nations at peace with one another almost became enemies as their teams faced off. The whole of Paris was turned upside down by the hordes of arriving soccer fans. All over the place, people sported the national colors of their favorite countries. In the end, host country France could rejoice at winning the World Champion title following a thrilling 3-0 victory over Brazil.
For Jan de Haan, the World Cup was a source of inspiration for the writing of Victory. The work is non-programmatic in design. After the introduction, in which intervals of fourths and fifths are conspicously presented, a march-like segment follows, interrupted by a subdued, slow middle section. The main theme, played by the alto saxophone, is stongly connected to the introduction.
