The Sardinians know how beautiful their island Sardinia is. That is why they cultivate it, as well as their centuries-old traditions. In Sardinia there are many traditional festivals around the year, most of which have a religious background. The Sardinians celebrate first and foremost for themselves, but are very happy about guests from outside. On Carnival Sunday, Oristano is the scene of the "Sa Sartiglia" equestrian festival, which has been held since 1543. Festively dressed riders gallop at high speed through the historic old town on magnificent horses, to spit a star hung in the air on your sword at the end.

The Sardinian Easter is celebrated with Easter processions on Good Friday and Easter Sunday, e.g. the procession "Lunissanti" in Castelsardo is known. On the 1st of May the Sagra di San Efisio in Cagliari takes place in memory of the liberation from the plague by the saint in 1657. Hundreds of beautifully decorated horses, bullock carts and countless groups of traditional costumes from all over Sardinia walk through the Via Roma.

At the beginning of September, Oliena opens its doors to the local population for a few days. During the Cortes Apertas a Oliena one experiences the life and the tradition of the region true to the original and gains at the same time also an insight into the social life of the population.

The typical ancient overtone singing of the Sardinian men deserves special mention. The Canto a Tenore is one of the oldest forms of singing in Europe and belongs to the immaterial world cultural heritage.
