Programme notes *: additional text

Satiric Dances, a three-movement suite, drawing upon incidental music which he composed for a theatrical production of an ancient Greek Old Comedy by Aristophanes.

The first movement is exotic, highly chromatic, even hinting octatonic. It is at once both hynotic and bombastic music. The movement concludes with a short, spirited, frenzied dance. A tarantella! The second movement is similarly bipartite - the initial sad music ("Mesto") is answered with heartfelt respite ("sentito"). This is emotional music worn on the sleeve. The third movement (yes, the tempo making really is "Allegro spumante") is rollicking, spontaneous, and ripping fun. In vino veritas! The suite barrels into a frenzied, festive, frenetic conclusion.

Satiric Dances presents two particular technical challenges. The sparse scoring in much of the second movement requires confident, soloistic performance skill on part of the principal trumpet, flute, clarinet and other melodic instruments. But despite such occasional technical challenges, this invigorating music exudes a love for life and invites all to live richly. Dello Joio recently departed us from this earth, but he lives on through such life-affirming music.
