Johan de Meij’s first symphony The Lord of the Rings is based on the trilogy of that name by J.R.R. Tolkien. This book has fascinated many millions of readers since its publication in 1955. The symphony consists of five separate movements, each illustrating a personage or an important episode from the book.

I. GANDALF describes the incomprehensible appearance and disappearance of the magician, who proves to be one of the most important persons in the trilogy. He also reappears in the 4th and 5th movements. The Allegro vivace expresses the magician's ride on his magnificent white horse.

II. In the part "LOTHLORIEN - der Elbenwald" the woodwinds paint the mood. The Elbenwald Lothlorien consists of plants, rare birds and mighty trees. The enchanting Allegretto expresses the meeting of the hobby Frodo with Mrs Galadriel. Frodo is almost scared to death when he sees a horrible eye in Galadriel's mirror, a wide, flat silver bowl filled with water. Only towards the end of this sentence can one hear the slowing of his heartbeat.

III "GOLLUM - Sméagol" is constantly searching for his beloved treasure, the ring. He is a creature with pale, glowing cat eyes, whose picture is painted by the soprano saxophone. The creature whimpers, lispes, hisses and mumbles and is submissive on one side and vicious on the other. It is constantly on the run.

IV. JOURNEY IN THE DARK
a. The Mines of Moria
b. The Bridge of Khazad-Dûm
In this movement the troublesome migration of the companions, at their head the magician "Gandalf" to the mines of Moria is described. The music is a monotonous rhythm carried by deep brass, piano and percussion. It conveys the fear and the slow progress in the darkness, all the troubles and horrors. In this context Gandalf must take up the fight with a terrible monster. In the merciless duel, the magician is drawn by this monster from the underground bridge of Khazad-dum into the abyss of shadow. The sounds of a funeral march show the horrified moving on of the companions.

V. HOBBITS - This symphony does not end exuberantly, but restrained and peaceful. Frodo and Gandalf go out by ship to the high seas and soon lose themselves far out in the west. This movement, however, also describes the nobleness of the Hobbit people and their decisiveness through a radiant hymn.
