In this work an old custom is described: long ago what it was common in many places in the Mediterranean to order professional funeral songs for a funeral. These songs expressed the suffering of the bereaved loudly and dramatically. Mostly these litanies were sung by women who had mastered this macabre art well and were willing to pay for it. In Kosika, a distinction was made between two different litanies:
... "Lamentation of a normal death"...
"Vocero", if the deceased had been murdered.
The singing in "Vocero" was painful, the act could only be atoned for by an act of revenge.
The present piece is based on a "Vocero" which was sung for the first time at the funeral of the country doctor Mateju. The melody rises from melancholic intensity to the climax of the "vow of revenge". The work was written in 1975, exactly 200 years after the event.
