Programme notes *: The composer, who so far has written only two works for wind music, has a fundamental knowledge of instrumentation that only allows excellent interpreters on the respective registers. Cartoon, written in 1991, is one of the most brilliant original works for wind orchestra in recent years. Although its sole aim is to be perfect musical entertainment, it demands the utmost from all the groups in the orchestra. The English composer makes the effect an end in itself; in the percussion alone 24 different instruments are used in addition to the timpani. All the ingredients of the "classical" cartoon are musically present: The grand opening, the exciting cat and mouse hunt, the stalking blowhard, the emotional romance and of course the finale. All this takes place in the imagination of the listener. Certainly different from the cinema screen or the television screen, where functional music, despite its rugged contrasts, is hardly noticed. The present work is based on a main theme, the processing of which is reproduced in various variations and forms by the instruments, both soloistically and register-wise. Quelle/Source: Covertext
