Despite the title "Boule de Feu" (Fireball) and the special character of this piece, it is more a composition of pure music than the interpretation of a visual program. The composition is no more and no less than a representation whose form is more classical by and large. Of course there are great dramatic feelings, which are supported by the contrasts of the different themes.
"Boule De Feu" was inspired by the author when he saw the ruins of a city that had been bombarded with phosphorus during the war between 1940 and 1945. So when the fire is represented by trills and fast passages (theme B in English horn), it shows the sadness and desolation of those who lost relatives, property, real estate or happiness during the bombing. This lost happiness and dwindling hope is depicted by dissonant chords, powerful, concise as a marker of the blows of fate that pelt down on this seemingly cursed city.
But one must watch out for any exaggeration. "Boule de Feu" remains pure music, and when a semblance of program is described above, it is merely a general idea of the atmosphere under which this work was composed.
