The Armenian Dances are a four-movement suite for wind orchestra based on authentic Armenian folksongs from the collected works of Gomidas Vartabed (1869-1935), the founder of classical Armenian music. Reed has caught the style, tempo and all the naturalness of these simple folksongs and dances and converted the possibilities of melodious, harmonious and rhythmic development arising from them into a unique symphonic language.

The first part consists of five Armenian folksongs that were arranged by Vartabed for solo voice with piano accompaniment or a-cappella choir. The first song "Tzirani Tzar" is sentimental with a very declamatory beginning; "The Song of the Partridge", opposite in rhythm and speed, follows in simple, childish tones. "Hoy, Nazan Eem" is a rhythmically animated dance song, followed by the statically lyric description of the "Alagyaz", a mountain in Armenia, and a charming and humorously laughing "Come, Come" ("Gna, Gna").

With his music Reed was anxious to be true to the spirit of Armenian music, a folk music that up till today still has not received the acknowledgment in the western world that it deserves.

In 1963 a conversation between Harry Begian and Alfred Reed took place about a composition that was to be based on Armenian folk melodies. Begian, son of Armenian emigrants, was born in 1921, the same year as Alfred Reed, in Pontiac, Michigan. Begian's father had to leave his homeland shortly before the outbreak of World War I to escape the ethnic cleansing by the Turks in the Ottoman Empire. On the surface, parallels can be seen between the Reeds' and Begian's family histories. It is possible that they contributed to the intimate friendship between Alfred and Harry that bound these two people together. Begian was a conductor and also an important figure in the field of symphonic brass music. He knew Reed's style through the performances of "Russian Christmas Music" and the "Ballad for Alto Saxophones" with the Cass Technical High School Band in Detroit, Michigan, in the 1950s. Reed had to put Begian off because he was snowed under with work at the time. However, in 1963 he had no idea that Begian would have to wait until 1974 before the Armenian Dances, Part I could be premiered.
