Programme notes *: This overture depicts the work and life of the farmer in classical form. The field motif is represented at the beginning with a muffled ostinato. The counterpoint in the clarinets, which already begins in the fifth bar, serves as a more serious and later a cheerful variation of the life motif. This is joined by a theme of the desire to work. A singing theme expressing hope and confidence begins in bar 80, followed by a transitional group and the theme sections among themselves, resulting in thunderous and fateful entanglements. After a short "Thanksgiving" the whole thing ends in joyful exuberance.
