Composer Grieg, Edvard
Arranger Tatzer, Willibald
Additional info/contents Henrik Ibsen and Edvard Grieg met in Rome in 1866 but never became friends. At that time Ibsen was working on the dramatic poem Peer Gynt, based on Norwegian fairy tales by Peter Christen Asbjørnsen. After the poetry's success, Ibsen planned to adapt it into a stage play and commissioned Grieg to write the music for it. The play premiered on February 24, 1876, together with Grieg's incidental music.

Feeling that his work would not be accepted outside Norway, Grieg composed two orchestral suites from this music in 1888 and 1891, omitting the spoken dialogue and the singing. He created the first suite (op. 46) in the attic apartment in the house of C. F. Peters Musikverlag at Talstraße 10 in Leipzig. It was completed on January 18, 1888 and premiered on November 1, 1888 under the baton of Gewandhaus Kapellmeister Carl Einecke in the Leipzig Gewandhaus . Grieg completed the second suite (op. 55) on September 12, 1891, and it was premiered under his direction on November 14, 1891 in Christiania (today Oslo) on the occasion of the celebrations of Grieg's 25th anniversary as a conductor.
