Programme notes *: The queen bee is the centre of a highly organised and fascinating state, often referred to as the "court state". In a hive, there is a remarkable social structure formed by the queen bee and her subjects, the workers and drones. This report provides an insight into the roles and functions of the members of the queen bee's court. - The queen bee is the only reproductive female in the hive. Her main task is to ensure the continuity of the colony by laying eggs. - The worker bees form the largest part of the colony and perform a variety of tasks in the hive. Their main tasks include collecting nectar and pollen, caring for the brood, cleaning the hive, building honeycombs, defending the colony and feeding the bee larvae. - Drones are the male bees in the hive. Their only task is to mate with the queen. Overall, the queen bee's court forms a remarkable example of social organisation and cooperation in the animal kingdom.
