Difficulty level 3
Duration 7:40
Additional info/contents The city Ayutthaya is located in central Thailand and, as the capital of the Siamese kingdom of Ayutthaya, was one of the most important cities in Southeast Asia. Worldwide trade relations and intercultural exchange with people from all over the world made Ayutthaya a metropolis in today's sense as early as the 17th and 18th centuries. On 7 April 1767, the city met a terrible fate from which it was never to recover - it was conquered, looted and almost completely destroyed by the Burmese.

The present composition describes the history of the city in anachronistic order. At the beginning of the piece, the bleak situation after the destruction by the conquerors is depicted ("The Destroyed City). The people remember the beginnings of Ayutthaya ("Memory of Construction"), the achievements of their ancestors and the splendour of their homeland ("Memory of Beauty"). But they also cannot forget the terrible events during the conquest ("memory of destruction"). In the end, however, the people remember the former splendour of Ayutthaya ("Resurrection of the city"). A simple but important musical figure that runs through the whole piece is a lament motif, expressed by a semitone step from the minor sixth to the fifth. This should be brought out in a special way by the conductor. At the very end of the piece, this figure is heard in the major key.
