Duration 5:30
Additional info/contents The crossover piece "A man and his trumpet" is a beautiful, Spanish-influenced trumpet feature of medium difficulty. A must for trumpeters and in the open improvisation part everyone can show what they can do.
The appeal is in switching between concertante brass sections to big band instrumentation and back again. With transcriptions for clarinet and trombone solo.

The introduction consists of a riff in baritone sax, bass trombone and tuba, and optional bass clarinet, euphonium, guitar, piano and electric bass, joined by another group of instruments in each of the four repetitions: saxophones (harmony), trumpets (interjections), woods and piano (movement) and horn, trombones and baritone. At the climax of the riff, the trumpet solo starts.

The accompaniment in the rhythm section remains, and the trumpet lays over it with a melodious and technically refined solo. After eight bars, the rest of the orchestra briefly interrupts for a beat, but the trumpet reclaims its terrain. In the beautiful middle section he/she can show how he/she masters his/her instrument. After a passage, it is the orchestra's turn, repeating the main theme in tutti.

After a drum solo, it goes into the improvisation part. Harmonies are written in flute, clarinet 1, tenor sax 2, trumpet 1, trombone 1, guitar and piano. The backgrounds can be rearranged for each solo. The end of each solo part is a distinctive signal of the whole band.

Note: From the big band recording, the transcriptions of the clarinet and trombone solos are notated in the respective voice.

After the improvisation part, the solo part is repeated and after the tutti is repeated again, it goes into the coda. Here the tension is released again with the same riff as at the beginning: in each round a group of instruments leaves until finally only baritone sax, bass trombone and tuba and optionally bass clarinet, euphonium, guitar, piano and electric bass and drums are playing again before a powerful drum solo prepares the final chord.

Crossover brass music with big band

The crossover version of A man and his trumpet is based 1:1 on the big band version. The wind band parts are supplemented and also replace the big band parts such as piano, guitar and electric bass if these are not occupied.

The attraction of the crossover version is the ability to switch between concertante wind music parts to the big band instrumentation and back again. In principle, the changes can be made at all transitions. Likewise, it is also possible to switch between orchestra and big band at the tuttie interjections. One possibility would be:

Introduction bar 1-12 Wind orchestra
Trumpet solo 1st and 2nd passage T13-27 Big band, tutti interjection T19/20 Wind orchestra
Middle section and orchestra tutti T28-50 Wind orchestra
Orchestra tutti T51-57 Big Band
Solo parts at will
Repetitions analogue
Coda bar 91-closing Wind orchestra

Crossover brass music with big band.

Introduction mesure 1-12 Orchestre à vent
Trompette solo 1er et 2ème passage T13-27 Big band, interjection tutti T19/20 Orchestre à vent
Section intermédiaire et tutti d'orchestre T28-50 Orchestre à vent
Orchestre tutti T51-57 Big Band
Parties solos à volonté
Répétitions analogues
Coda mesure 91-fermeture Orchestre à vent
