In 2018 Austria celebrated the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Republic. In October 2016, the Federal Chancellor established the "Advisory Council for the Year of Remembrance and Remembrance 2018" in order to support the Federal Government in connection with the numerous activities taking place in this year of commemoration and remembrance.

However, 2018 also saw a number of other "round" anniversaries which are of great relevance for the Austrian culture of remembrance and which were therefore also thematised in 2018: the revolutionary year 1848; the year of the "Anschluss" of Austria to the German Empire 1938 - this year, in the night of the 9th anniversary of the Second World War, the "Year of the Anschluss" of Austria to the German Empire 1938. The years 1948 (Universal Declaration of Human Rights) and 1958 (the year in which the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms entered into force in Austria) and the year of the "Prague Spring" 1968.
