Programme notes *: On the Untersberg near Berchtesgaden there are more legends than anywhere else in Bavaria - about time holes, dwarfs and miracles. What is behind the haunting? The whole region lives from energy fields and miracles that blow some people's minds and make others scoff. Nowhere in Upper Bavaria are there as many esotericists as on the Untersberg. Between Bad Reichenhall, Berchtesgaden and Grödig near Salzburg, the cornerstone of the Limestone Alps rises like a bolt up to 1972 metres above sea level. A mountain range covering 70 square kilometres, famous for the longest cave system in Germany, its huge summit plateau - and its legends and myths. One particular myth is the Wild Hunt of the Untersberg ("Das Wilde Gjoad"), which probably originally refers to the Untersberg as a weather indicator in its exposed position on the edge of the Alps. This has become part of the Perchten customs of the Rauhnächte around Christmas and has been revived in the traditional sense since the 1980s. Its typical characters include Vorpercht, Death, the Raven, Moosweiberl, Baumpercht, Hahnengickerl, the Giant Abfalter, the Bear and the Bear Driver, the Witch, the Habergeiß and the Saurüssel. Related to the Wild Hunt is the dragon hole at the Schellenbergsattel, a second one, an old mine, is located in St. Leonhard - such "dragon" or "devil" holes are found more frequently in the limestone karst.
