Additional info/contents The Curse of the Mermaid tells the story of a greedy and wealthy fisherman wanting to make money in any way possible. When his business starts to fail, he puts the blame on the mermaids. One day, the fisherman kills a mermaid, who casts a spell on him shortly before she disappears into the water. The composition is in the form of a symphonic poem, starting slow and then mysteriously opening up revealing a fantastic colourful world of sounds and motion. There are various moments during the piece where the composer includes broad and beautiful melodic material, as well as surprising effects and great rhythmical interest.

In a small fishing village washed by the waves of the sea, there lived a wealthy fisherman whose greed for wealth and profit seemed limitless. Day after day he set out into the deep waters in his boat and always returned with his nets bulging. His wealth grew and his reputation in the village was unsurpassed.

But the greedy fisherman wanted more. He couldn't get enough of the treasures of the sea, and his desire for even greater wealth drove him to go farther and farther out, casting his net ever deeper and catching more fish than his boat could carry.

However, over time the abundance of fish began to decline. The nets remained empty and the yield became smaller and smaller. The fisherman desperately searched for someone to blame for his misfortune. And so he decided to believe the legends of the ancient sailors and blame the water mermaids.

One day, when the fog lay thick over the sea and the waves were raging wildly, the fisherman saw a graceful figure on the edge of his boat. It was a water nymph whose beauty and grace dwarfed everything around her. The greedy fisherman, blinded by greed and anger, drew his knife and stabbed the mermaid before she could retreat into the waves.

But the mermaid only smiled sadly as she spoke of the spell that would punish the greedy fisherman for his actions. "You will reap the rewards of your greed," she whispered before sinking into the water. The following night the fisherman dreamed of untold wealth and endless happiness. But when he awoke, he found himself alone on his boat in the middle of the storm. The waves were beating high, the wind was howling, and the sea was slowly but surely swallowing him up.

The legend of the greedy, wealthy fisherman who tempted his fate and was ultimately consumed by his own greed was told for a long time in the fishing village. A memorial to those who believed that the treasures of the sea could never run dry and that nature would never defend itself against man's greed.
