Additional info/contents Saariselkä is a village in the mountains of northern Finland, famous for its Northern Lights (aurora). This tone poem captures the romantic beauty of a nearby forest and the restless movement of the Northern Lights in the night sky.

The beginning shows an intense, cold world. A beautiful horn melody, woodwind solos and sparkling glockenspiel arpeggios create a vivid impression. A quick tutti climax introduces a fast section that emphasises the image of icy weather and the effects of a heavy snowstorm and fierce wind. As the musical momentum intensifies, a resounding brass fanfare shifts the tempo into the middle section.

A lush, romantic interlude reveals the majesty of the northern lights floating in the calm sky. The seductive melody recalls the haunting beauty of Sibelius' Finlandia. This is followed by an exuberant 6/8 recapitulation that finally brings all the central themes together in a grand tutti finale.
