Programme notes *: In the deep forests of French-speaking Canada lived a group of workers trapped in a remote settlement during the long winter months. Surrounded by snow-covered forests and frozen rivers, workers longed for their families who lived far away at Christmas time. But the winter conditions made it nearly impossible to leave the remote area. Legend told of a mysterious "flying canoe" that workers could use to quickly get to their families. But the canoe was no ordinary boat. It was said to have magical powers and was created by a dark force. One icy December evening, as the workers sat around the campfire and longed to go home, they decided to make a pact with the devil to use the flying canoe. In a desperate moment of hope and longing, they agreed to a dangerous deal. The terms were clear: the devil would lend them the flying canoe, but in return they would have to give him their souls once they had visited their families and returned. With hesitant hearts and heavy minds, the workers climbed into the flying canoe and took off into the icy night. The wind howled around them as they soared over the snowy treetops and frozen rivers. When they finally reached their families, the joy of seeing each other was short-lived, as the terms of the pact with the devil weighed heavily on their hearts. The night before their departure, as the snow fell quietly from the sky and bathed the world in a silvery light, the workers stood on the banks of the river and hesitated. They knew that the devil would claim their souls once they returned. In a moment of clarity and determination, the workers decided to leave the flying canoe behind and challenge the devil. They would rather stay in the icy forests than sell their souls. So they remained caught between two worlds - between the longing for their families and the fight for their own souls. And as the winter wore on, covering the land with snow, the story was told of the brave workers who defied the devil and remained between worlds until they finally found salvation.
